<p>The Aga Khan University, Academic Projects Afghanistan (AKU-APA) has a mandate to support human resource development in health and education sectors in Afghanistan, through providing technical support to ministries of Public Health and Higher Education. Specifically, AKU-APA has been working with Ghazanfar Institute of Health Sciences (GIHS), Kabul and its regional institutes; Kabul Medical University (KMU) and French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children (FMIC), in nursing, midwifery and postgraduate medical education. Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery (AKU-SoNaM) and Medical College have been providing technical assistance to strengthen the quality of Nursing and Midwifery Education in Afghanistan since 2002 through AKU-APA. Over 1600 nurses and midwives for their diploma programme and more than 2000 other health and education personnel have been trained in Pakistan and Afghanistan in short and long courses to enhance their knowledge and skills. AKU-APA also supports a General Nursing Diploma program in Faizabad, with Badakhshan Institute of Health Sciences and runs a Maternal and New-born Surveillance System research project in selected districts of Badakhshan. A Training and Policy Unit (TPU) was established at the GIHS in 2012, which is the focal reference of the Institutes of Health Sciences (IHSs) system in Afghanistan for nursing and midwifery education. The TPU-GIHS is responsible for development and revision of curriculums, standards and policies related to nursing and midwifery education and build capacity of trainers from GIHS as well as regional IHSs for effective implementation. </p>
